So I packed up my life into the boot of your car I must have driven for an hour or two before I hit the bar It terrifies me how you used to love to get me down I’m really sorry that I took your car, but I just had to get out of town It wasn’t one specific thing you did, it wasn’t one specific thing that you said But as we laid there on your bed, all the feelings that I hid came to surface in my head And in your glove compartment, there’s nothing but old cassettes I put one on and I heard this song that I wrote for you when we met It mystifies me how I used to let you get me down I’m so sorry that I took your car but babe, I just had to get out of town It wasn’t one specific thing you did, it wasn’t one specific thing that you said But as we laid there on your bed, all the feelings that I hid came to surface in my head It mystifies me how I used to let you get me down I’m so sorry that I took your car but babe, I just had to get out of town It wasn’t one specific thing you did, it wasn’t one specific thing that you said But as we laid there on your bed, all the feelings that I hid came to surface in my head All the feelings that I hid, came to surface in my head.

Midland girl’s gone to the south She’s painted up her eyes and her mouth Oh, there she goes again She’s drinking in cool bars with cool new friends Midland girl’s gone to the south She’s painted up her eyes and her mouth Oh look, she trips again – my little comedienne Midland girl’s gone to the south Doors started to close, on the things she wanted most And all the people said she froze. Who knows? And sometimes, she thinks of way back when When she was dancing in cool bars with cool new friends Midland Girl’s gone to the south 'Cos Midland Girls go to the south.

You can stay tonight, but if you stay tonight You’re only gonna end up feeling used Baby, I’m bad news I’ve got the Bethnal Green Blues I’m a counterfeit, I’m a selfish shit Just walk away – or you’ll end up real confused Baby, I’m bad news I’ve got the Bethnal Green Blues I can’t go on this way The way you laughed tonight, when you left tonight Well, it had that note he had, when he was drunken and amused He laughed like that before he gave me the news Gave me the Bethnal Green Blues Gave me the Bethnal Green Blues.

Josephine 02:20
Oh Josephine, the rain drives hard against the window screen Oh Josephine, the rain drives hard against the window screen And you should know, what you should show She was so pretty and so green. I always loved you, Jo, but I was thinking about the show – Josephine Oh, Josephine, between the cat’s eyes and the clouds of green Oh, Josephine, between the traffic and the cheap caffeine And people go – when people go. She was so pretty and so green. I always loved you, Jo, but I was thinking about the show – Josephine Down unknown roads, I face my foe The wettest night we’d ever seen. Far past the rain you’ll go, but we’ll be thinking about you, Jo. Josephine.

about

Sugarcane’s Caribbean indie conjures up the Rio beachfront but never leaves the Birmingham winter. Their debut EP contains four assured and alluring pop songs, which mix warm tones with chilly sentiments.

As the former bassist of Mr. Hudson and the Library, Robin French toured with Amy Winehouse, The Police and Kanye West. His new band Sugarcane’s hybrid sound updates vintage bossa nova & calypso for twenty-first century Britain.

With one British parent and one from the Caribbean, it's not surprising Robin's music is a post-Colonial jumble. Acoustic backyard sambas meet French chansons. Bahian drumming melds with West Indian steel pan, an old drum machine, and a toy melodica.
