about

This is a song about escaping - about the joy and melancholy of going 'fuck it', junking your old life, and starting again. We’re humans - we can’t help thinking the grass is greener - but there’s always the anxiety you’re just being mad - and the impossibility of recapturing what you lost.

This had to be Sugarcane’s first single - for me, it looks forward and back at the same time. It’s a song I wrote with Mr. Hudson for the Mr. Hudson and the Library album “Tale of Two Cities" many moons ago.

I’d already started playing around changing the chords into more bossa nova inversions - just for fun really. But when Antonia was round at mine, I got her to sing it - and I knew we had to do something with it. Her vocal is pure magic.

lyrics

So I packed up my life into the boot of your car
I must have driven for an hour or two before I hit the bar

It terrifies me how you used to love to get me down
I’m really sorry that I took your car, but I just had to get out of town

It wasn’t one specific thing you did, it wasn’t one specific thing that you said
But as we laid there on your bed, all the feelings that I hid came to surface in my head

And in your glove compartment, there’s nothing but old cassettes
I put one on and I heard this song that I wrote for you when we met

It mystifies me how I used to let you get me down
I’m so sorry that I took your car but babe, I just had to get out of town

It wasn’t one specific thing you did, it wasn’t one specific thing that you said
But as we laid there on your bed, all the feelings that I hid came to surface in my head

It mystifies me how I used to let you get me down
I’m so sorry that I took your car but babe, I just had to get out of town

It wasn’t one specific thing you did, it wasn’t one specific thing that you said
But as we laid there on your bed, all the feelings that I hid came to surface in my head
All the feelings that I hid, came to surface in my head.

about

Sugarcane London, UK

Sugarcane’s hybrid sound updates vintage samba and calypso for twenty-first century London. With one British parent and one from the Caribbean, it's not surprising Robin's music is a post-Colonial jumble. Acoustic backyard sambas meet French chansons. Bahian drumming melds with West Indian steel pan, an old drum machine, and a toy melodica. ... more
